‘Buitenspel’ (eng:‘Offside’) is a light, rhythmic and intimate film about two friends, Anne and Nino, who have created their own colourful and safe bubble in a mainly grim macho world. They act as a joint front, by means of playing games against men to undermine their masculinity, but when Anne’s father enters their bubble, something changes in their dynamic. While Nino continues her game and doesn’t make an exception, Anne starts to realise that their bubble is not that inclusive at all. As Nino continues to misbehave, Anne loses control: the first cracks in their bond and friendship start to show.
