I’m Mark, a filmmaker residing in Amsterdam. I graduated in 2018 from the HKU: Utrecht School of the Arts. My main focus is on directing and screenwriting.
With a passion for cinema as a starting point, I try to find the poetry of the medium in all aspects of life. Possessing an innate longing for the past, I look at the contemporary world, searching for stylised imperfections: an analogue fringe. I find this inspiration in nature; its subtle variety in textures, colours and scents; its capricious tendencies and ever ongoing cycle of reinvention and rejuvenation.
This comes back in my work, in which I try to create an atmospheric and tactile quality. Since I find comfort in grey areas, it also tends to be multi interpretable and leaves room for melancholy, sadness and introspection, though it retains some softness and playfulness as well. I embrace universal themes and emotions in my work, because these tend to invoke feelings so primal that they can be felt all through time and by everyone, no matter their background. Society's perception of identity, nature and intimacy are my main recurrent themes. I am also interested in myths and folk tales; story’s with fantastical elements and story’s regarding gender and traits considered feminine in our society.
I studied Audio Visual Media at University of the Arts Utrecht, with a focus on directing, writing and production design. This uncommon blend of disciplines can be seen in my work; I examine the medium of film in all it’s aspects without locking my interest in a single discipline.
