When Luc and Ruben of the Geldwolven asked me to shoot a picture for the cover of their new song, I offered to also film a ‘tableau’ for further use with song texts as a clip. The song ‘INDEPROBLEMEN’ is about feeling social pressure to be accomplished at a certain age: to have a lawn and a rhododendron. But how can one be like that if one has never adhered to societies norms of performance and achievement? If one never, even in high school, sought after a ‘civil’, bourgeois lifestyle, might that just be part of that person? Even though one acknowledges this, it can still create a feeling of stagnation and frustration because of societal pressure. This song accepts this in a cheerful way, with Ruben singing ‘I have always been this way.’.
We came up with the idea of using public transport as a visualisation for this inner conflict. While most people in their mid-twenties own a car or have one on lease from their jobs, some still take the bus. Whilst these are merely different modes of transport, there is a perceived difference in socio-economic status between the transportees. At first, we chose to portray them in the interior of a bus, but due to current Covid-19 regulations that require everyone to wear a mask, we opted for a busstop since the title (which translates to ‘In Trouble’) could be interpreted incorrectly. The final picture at the busstop actually played quite well into the feeling of stagnation.
